Wearable aromatherapy for you and your pets
Aromatherapy was my first modality and my favourite one to use with horses and dogs. Essential oils can be up to seventy times stronger than the herb it has been extracted from, and if applied to a horse or dogs muzzle cause irritation or even burn their sensitive skin.
To avoid this unpleasant reaction I started applying essential oils to a different absorbent substances. In the 1990 I started with the magic tissue a rider could put in their breast pocket or tuck inside their bra. Today my tags have become fashion accessories for clients and their dogs and horses.
You will find a various styles I am using to clip onto collars and halters, and if you don’t have a pet you can use yourself. I have one clipped to my keyring and another to my handbag.
The tag absorbs the essential oil. You may think the scent is not strong enough, but don’t forget a horse or dog has a much more developed sense of smell that does not fatigue like a human’s does.
3 to 5 drops of essentials oils is often enough to help with behavioural issues, and if you are using the tags as a pick-me-up after an illness.
You will find a variety of styles and as ideals develop, these will evolve. If you want to extend the life of the tag, do not leave it on your dog or horse – use it when the animal needs calming or if you are using at night when they are ‘inside’ or in a stable. The tag can get ‘shabby’ over time.
